Ian Whitcomb, One Hit Wonder British Invader of the 1960s and teen heart-throb, never went home. Instead he tried to settle down in Los Angeles County where, over the years, he produced a Grammy-winning CD, wrote songs for movies, auditioned for butler roles in TV commercials, had and lost dogs, married successfully, and continued to play his ukulele as the ship went down. Now the entire soap opera (1996--2008), roped together in hard copy with appropriate photos, can be relished as a roller coaster of self-pity, vaunting and failed ambition, jealousy, bathos and pathos, culminating in a Big Dream. In other words, this is a comedy book. Mainline Show Biz may have passed Whitcomb by but here in these precious pages he creates his own world of heroes and villains with himself as King in order to get sweet revenge through the twisted lingo of his India rubber sword.

Have long loved Ian Whitcomb, and this collection of letters is like having him at the dinner table every night. Sometimes politically incorrect, sometimes less than tolerant, but always witty, and in the end a true friend of America.Product details

Letters from Lotusland edition by Ian Whitcomb Don Elwell Arts Photography eBooks Reviews
Ian Whitcomb has traveled a path known to so few, and now is the chance to experience all the twists and turns vicariously through this witty 500 page memoir. As a Top 10 recording artist in the 1960's, Ian rode high upon the crest of the wave known as the British Invasion. And things only got more interesting from there.
Born and bred in the pre-Beatles era of the UK, Ian could be called 'the last of a dying breed' which is sad for the breed. Letters from Lotusland is a collection of Ian's 'letters' which weave together to create a journal full of observation, great fun, a love of old Los Angeles, history, music, politics, dogs, neighbors at war, and a bit of remorse just to keep the reader on his toes.
Do yourself a favor and dive into this offering before the author's words leap off the page.
Full disclosure I got a copy of this book when I reviewed it for a now defunct magazine. I feel it's worth re-recommending because it stands apart from so many of the titles with which it may be forced to become bedfellows i.e., books about the 60s. Letters from Lotusland isn't like the lot of them--not just for Ian's keen eye for what took place around him (and inside him he's merciless on his own shortcomings) but because his take on it all eschews the orthodox view, which is what you usually get in such memoirs. That's why I'd especially tout it to younger readers, who surely by now must've had their fill of the standard Jim-Morrison-is-God/Woodstock-changed-the-world line.
Plus, Letters runs right up to the near-present, and, truth be told, Ian's recounting of his perennial problems with a dodgy neighbor are just as engaging as his tales of Jagger and the rest. I'd put this one with Andrew Oldham's Stoned and its sequel as among the best recollections of the decade that just won't go away (nor should it).
Have long loved Ian Whitcomb, and this collection of letters is like having him at the dinner table every night. Sometimes politically incorrect, sometimes less than tolerant, but always witty, and in the end a true friend of America.
