The Zen of Max (a memoir of great wisdom and many naps) - edition by Lou Belcher. Crafts, Hobbies & Home eBooks @ . Reviews

I have lived with a number of cat through the years. Each had a distinct personality. However, it wasn't until I read The Zen of Max that I realized how fortunate I have been. The journey that Lou Belcher and Max shared was a remarkable example of mutual caring and love. As I moved through the story, I was reminded of similar episodes with my cats, thus giving me additional pleasurable memories. Thank you Lou.
Having had many a Cat in my day, on our country property where the numbers multipled monthly, I have experienced the charm and personalities of the feline world. LOU's sweet account of Max has brought to life so many memories that I have recalled with a smile!
She does indeed, capture the Zen of Max!
I loved this book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading! So well written, and the subject is one all Cat lovers can identify with. As soon as I finished, I rushed off to get one to send to my Mom (I just couldn't part with MY copy)! I thought the concept of "Lessons Learned" was a truly unique way of telling the tale.
Wonderful, wonderful book!!! (Mom loved it, too.)
For my whole life, I have lived with people who had cat allergies. I never knew I was missing out on something until reading this book. Lou Belcher's sensitive, humorous and insightful retelling of her life with Max the cat, opened up a whole new world to me. I'm not sure if all cats are like Max, but Lou was lucky to find him. It is a charming, often very funny light read about unconditional love. I want a cat like Max!
The Zen of Max is an enlightening, sensitive, and humorous read about Lou Belcher's very unique cat. Max was one of those creatures who come into our lives and exhibit unconditional love from day one. They neither ask no expect anything in return. They are just love.

The book touched my heart in many ways. One of them was the telling of the 10 pm bedtime ritual which entailed Lou's turning off the light and their going to bed. One night when Max noticed Lou was not going to bed on time, he tackled her reading lamp to the floor and broke it. She readily got the message and off to bed they went. This scene reminded me of dog, Roxy. As it was getting late one night she looked at my reading lamp, the ceiling fan, and then me. I smiled, shut everything off and we, too, went to bed.

Clumsy by nature Max, seemed to know instinctively to be careful with Lou's mother, a stroke victim who was nearly blind. Instead of flying across the room and jumping into her lap, Max would reach up and tap her with his paw. Of course, this would lead to his receiving "treats" from the mother.

Lessons Learned is an excellent way to not only end the book, but also to allow the reader access into Max's mind.

An awesome read, the book really touched my heart!
I'm well aware how much a cat can change your life when you least expect it, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lou Belcher's memoir about the sixteen years she shared with Max. Max was by Lou's side through happy moments and sad ones, through challenges and loss, and along the way, he taught her a few things about life. The bond between Max and the author comes through in every word, and you will smile as you think about the bond with your own cats, both past and present.

The entire book touches the heart, but one of the most moving passages for me was when the author moves to Florida to be closer to her ailing mother. Max provides support and comfort not only to Lou as she deals with the logistical and emotional challenges of her mother's declining health, but he also works his cat magic on Lou's mother. I loved reading about how this usually somewhat clumsy cat was able to manage his energy and be gentle around a fragile, older woman.

This is the kind of book that you will want to savor as you follow Max and Lou's journey, and you'll find yourself chuckling at some of the lessons, and reflecting on others. Highly recommended for all cat lovers.
Well, as I wrote in the title, I'm surely not what is known as a "cat person." That said, I will admit, old Max was a heck of a cat, that he was. He had lots of good things to say, that could serve us all well. I hear there's another book on the way. I hope it's as well written and entertaining as this one.
I loved The Zen of Max. It's well written and humorously told. I was happy to remember all the cats I've had throughout my life while reading about Max--he seemed to cover all the best in cat behavior. I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased copies for the cat lovers on my holiday shopping list this year.
